Book Corners Program in Henan Province

Written by Gaolin and Zhang Huan

A recent visit to Lankao County, Henan Province shed lights on the Book Corner program in eight primary schools in three townships. The books in all schools are well used, and some popular titles are worn out. Here is a report from Gao Lin and Zhang Huan.

Thanks to the devotion of efforts and times by teachers, children have expressed great enthusiasm in reading. The program has made good books easily accessible, created spaces for children to read, at the same time without the pressures of homework, exams or other traditional classroom requirements. The program is designed with the principle of “student-centered” in mind.

On January 9th, we visited three primary schools in Hongmiao township. Both teachers and students speak highly of the books, and some demand more. When asked if they would like to take books home for the winter break, the students gave a resounding yes. The students also demonstrated a resolve to protect these books while they are in their possession.

In Kaocheng township, we visited two schools each with four hundred students. The open book corner was well used and managed by students. In Yifeng township, Laojunying Primary School’s open book corner has divided accessible time for students from different grades; While Gengzhuang Primary School set up a book corner and benches open for students of all grades.

The principals and teachers are all very active and supportive in making sure the program is a success. They reported that since the start of the book corner and reading program, students have made great progress in their oral and written expression, and have shown positive change behaviorally.
